Why should I start my tour in Western Australia?

Situated on the banks of the Swan River, Perth/Boorloo is both a modern city, and nestled in nature. It’s also a richly cultural city, proud of its heritage (it has the best collection of Aboriginal art in the world) yet striding towards the future with its soaring skyline, world-class museums and galleries, unique wildlife, rooftop bars and restaurants and booming street art scene. Add scenic parks and gardens and 19 pristine beaches and you have a surf, sunshine and city combo that’s pretty hard to beat.

Perth may be a modern city, but there are countless opportunities to see, hear and engage with the Noongar Aboriginal people who lived here thousands of years before the city was built. Kings Park – one of the world’s largest and most beautiful inner-city parks – is one such place. Set on the banks of the gleaming Swan River, within sight of Perth’s glittering high-rise skyline, you can walk through the park with an Aboriginal guide hearing stories, and learning about traditional bush food and medicine. In the Art Gallery of Western Australia, you can see a huge collection of Aboriginal art and artefacts including ceremonial poles, dot paintings and charcoal portraits.

Sticking close to Perth, Rottnest Island is a car-free paradise just 25 minutes away by ferry. Along with 63 stunning sandy beaches and 20 aquamarine bays, the island has an endemic population of the world’s happiest animal, small and friendly marsupials known as quokkas, which are related to kangaroos and wallabies. Just 30 minutes from Perth, Fremantle is a historic and bohemian port city, bursting with vibrancy, colour and quirky culture. With curved colonial streets, unique breweries, the convict-built World Heritage listed Fremantle prison and historic, hidden lanes, some people call it Perth’s Old Town. It’s also close to some of Perth’s most stunning beaches including marine-life rich Cottesloe and the surfers’ favourite, Trigg.

Further afield, take a short Qantas flight from Perth to Broome to explore the vast and ancient Kimberley, including the giant rocky domes of the 350-million-year-old Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park and the extraordinary Horizontal Falls. Or take the two-hour flight to Exmouth on Western Australia’s Northwest Cape to swim and snorkel over the coral reefs and darting, colourful fish in Ningaloo, the world’s longest fringing reef. Other Western Australia wonders include the giant, striped curving wall known as Wave Rock, and the otherworldly candy floss pink waters of Hutt Lagoon.
