A taste of the Deep South
America’s Deep South is famous for its intoxicating mix of history, culture and cuisine. There is no better way to savour the unique flavour of the Deep South than to visit its various regions and taste their signature dishes. After all, mouth-watering meals are part of the magic, and the perfect complement to Dixie’s unique sights and sounds.
Meals fit for the King in Memphis, Tennessee
Not only was Elvis Presley the king of rock and roll, he was also a great lover of Southern cuisine. After visiting Graceland, Elvis’ hallowed home, why not try the Memphis dishes that were regularly on the superstar’s menu? Dry-rub charcoal ribs are particularly tasty. Given a flavourful blanket of spices, the pork ribs evoke the Deep South with each delicious bite. What should you have for dessert? It has to be a chocolaty slice of Mississippi mud pie or a large helping of peach cobbler.
Satisfy your appetite in Atlanta, Georgia
Get swept away with the beautiful Atlanta scenery and cultural charm immortalised in the Hollywood epic Gone with the Wind. Then visit the Martin Luther King Memorial and learn the fascinating history and legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. Atlanta has many great diners where you can try traditional dishes like fried chicken with white pepper gravy, pan-fried okra and shrimp and cheese grits, with a glass of iced sweet tea, ‘the table wine of the South’, of course.
For a succulent Southern barbeque head to Nashville, Tennessee
While Nashville is famous for country and western music, it is equally famous for lively honky-tonk bars and scrumptious barbeque food. After treating your eyes and ears with a visit to the fantastic Country Music Hall of Fame, treat your taste buds to a traditional Deep South barbeque in the vibrant downtown district. Enjoy pork shoulder, beef brisket and hot wings with a side of slaw and smoked green beans for an authentic Southern barbeque experience.
Enjoy the jazz and cuisine of New Orleans, Louisiana
Few cities in the United States can match the culture and history of New Orleans. French colonial, Cajun, Creole and African influences blended to create a unique culture and cuisine famous worldwide. Not only is New Orleans the birthplace of Jazz, but it is home to truly delicious dishes. Be sure to try Creole Jambalaya, a spicy form of paella made with chicken, sausage or seafood, and Cajun Crawfish Étouffée, a delicious spicy stew of crawfish, onion, celery and bell peppers served over rice.
During your travels you will discover that Dixie has delights for all of your senses. Be sure to include dining on your travel plan to experience the full flavour of the Deep South as you take in its spectacular sights and sounds.
